In 2010 and upon retirement, Professor Khalessi wrote:

I have had the honour of witnessing the landscape of Medicine, particularly the field of Otolaryngology, and specifically the discipline of Otology, develop and evolve in Iran over the last 50 years.

Otology has been my passion and I have enjoyed learning this craft, practicing its principles, and delving into the frontiers of otological research. I will never tire of reading about developments in this field, discussing clinical complexities with my peers, or passing my knowledge onto students. I have enjoyed seeing the establishment of academic practice in Iran and greater inclusive discussion on treatment options, operative management and controversial areas in Otology, for this can only benefit our profession, our discipline, and our patients.

Over the years, I have made numerous professional connections, both locally and abroad, and witnessed the struggle and devotion required to push the boundaries in progressing the art and science of Otology. I admire the dedication and resolve of my peers. I pay tribute to the masters of the past and the pioneers of the present.

In the years that lie before me, I intend to maintain an interest in the study of Otology, despite retiring from clinical practice. I will watch with pleasure and pride as my colleagues and former students lead the progress of Otology in Iran.
